Who can take the Colorado Writing Project summer courses?
- CWP is open to anyone interested in literacy and writing. Kindergarten teachers have studied with college instructors. Science teachers have joined English, history, physical education and math teachers to learn more about writing. Principals and other administrators are among the growing list of CWP fellows.
How many hours do the workshops and seminars meet?
- CWP I, II, and III workshops meet for nine days. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m.
- Seminars meet for two consecutive days. Classes usually begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m., although times may be adjusted to accommodate scheduling of other activities at some sites.
- The Fall Follow-up workshops meet one day a month, September through December.
How much does each CWP course cost?
- The Workshop registration for CWP I, II, or III is $600 + about $55 for course texts. For an additional charge of approximately $75 per credit hour, participants can receive graduate credit through the University of Colorado-Denver (4 semester hours for CWP I, II, or III; 1 hour for Fall follow-up workshops).
- Fees for Seminars are $200.
- Cost of Follow-up Workshops and Custom-designed Professional Development are negotiated with school districts on a case-by-case basis.
- Many districts pay for part or all of workshop and seminar fees with professional development and grant funds, so check with your district about scholarship assistance.
- Fees for Young Writers Camps are $200 per camper.
Does CWP count towards licensure renewal?
- Yes. Teachers who hold a valid Colorado teaching license may use professional development activities like CWP when applying for license renewal.
Can I receive college credit for Workshop courses?
- Yes. For an additional fee, participants are offered the option of graduate credit through the University of Colorado-Denver. CWP I, II, or III each qualify for 4 semester hours of credit, and the Fall Follow-up Workshops for 1 hour.
Does the UCD graduate credit count towards advancement on district salary schedules?
- Yes, but be sure to check with your school district. Every school district in Colorado has its own negotiated salary agreement, which specifies local requirements for advancement on salary scales.
Greetings,
I am simply an adult who has always enjoyed expressing myself through writing and now that I am working less would like to do more of it. I’m looking for something that will give a complete novice some basic instruction/skills. What/where do you suggest ? I live in Grand Junction and am fairly new to the area.
Thank you in advance for your time,
Sandra Eisenberg

Hi Sandra–
Maybe check out the Western Colorado Writers’ Forum (http://www.westerncoloradowriters.org/) or the Grand Junction Writers’ Cooperative (http://www.gjarts.org/local-artists-groups-galleries/cultural-organization/?organization=grand-junction-writers-cooperative-2debf). These two organizations might be able to point you toward your local resources there (I’m writing this from Boulder). Best of luck to you!

Can I ask where teachers typically live during the 9 days of the CWP I, II and III workshops? Is their housing available for folks from out of town?

Hi Casey. Typically people attend a CWP site close enough to where they live to commute to the site each day. But I’m sure we could recommend lodging or get you in touch with someone who can if you attend a session from out of town.

Hello,
I have taken this class in the past and I am wondering if you know if the Colorado Writing Project can go toward ELL credit of CDE. If so do you have a descriptive course explanation on your page somewhere as to be applied toward ELL credit? Thank you

Hi Leslie! Sorry for the slow reply. We’re not sure if CWP can count toward ELL credit for CDE. That’s a question for CDE. Let us know if you need a course description and we can get that to you. Thanks!
